NO FIREWORKS DISPLAY

In the interest of public safety and in line with Covid restrictions, there will be no 9pm or midnight fireworks displays and mass outdoor gatherings are prohibited. The safest way to celebrate in the city is to make a booking to visit a hospitality venue.

Free public transport
All train, tram and bus services will be free from 6pm on 31 December until 6am on 1 January. More detailed transport information below.

  • Trains

    One New Year’s Eve, all services will run to a normal weekday timetable with additional special services. See the PTV website for details.

    Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations will be open all night.

    On 1 January, trains will run to a public holiday timetable with night network running.

  • Trams

    On New Year’s Eve trams will run to a standard weekday timetable.

    On 1 January, trams will run to a holiday Saturday timetable with the City Circle running up to 9pm only.

    There are multiple changes to tram services on NYE. Check the PTV website for more information.

  • V/Line

    V/Line train and road coach services will run to a normal weekday timetable. Call 1800 800 007 or check the PTV website for more information.

  • Buses

    Metropolitan bus services will run to a normal weekday timetable.

  • Taxis

    On New Year’s Eve, people attending any celebrations are strongly encouraged to use the public transport services. If you are planning to catch a taxi, please note that it is very difficult for vehicles to get in and out of the city due to road closures.

    Taxi ranks are recommended as a safer option as they are staffed by a security officer in a distinct uniform and monitored by security cameras.

    Please take note of changes to parking restrictions and traffic access at city locations on Thursday 31 December and Friday 1 January.
