New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year in the city. Here’s all you need to know to plan ahead and ensure you have a safe and enjoyable evening.

  • Fireworks and Celebration Zones

    Fireworks and Celebration Zones

    The best views of the inner-city fireworks are from the free Celebration Zones, or from outside the city anywhere you can see the skyline.

    The Celebration Zones require no bookings are free to enter – just come along and enjoy music and entertainment all night long. Pack a picnic or purchase food and refreshments from on-site food trucks.

    Celebration Zones hours are: 6pm to 1am.
    Remember, all Celebration Zones are alcohol free.

  • Crowd Movements

    Crowd Movements

    With large crowds expected on New Year’s Eve, a number of roads will be closed with pedestrian access to some areas impacted throughout the evening. Take note of these and ensure you’ve made a plan if you’re heading into the city.

    From 7pm

    • The Elizabeth St underpass will be accessible by train patrons only, with all attendees exiting onto Elizabeth St.
    • Northbank, Southbank Pedestrian Bridge and Sandridge Bridge will be closed to the public on the night.

    From 10.30pm

    • Closures and detours will be in place between Russell St and Elizabeth St and Collins St and Southbank Boulevard.

    New Year’s Eve Celebration Zones will go ahead rain, hail or shine. Keep an eye on the forecast to make sure you come prepared for the weather.

  • Road Closures and Tow Away Zones

    Road Closures and Tow Away Zones

    There will be road closures and tow away zones in place across the city before, during and after New Year’s Eve. The best way to travel to and from the city is by arriving early on public transport, but if you are planning on driving, please make sure you check the full list of road closures and tow away zones.

    Please be aware that there will be new road closures in place around Docklands this year. See here for more details.

    From 9.00pm – 10.00pm and 11.30pm – 12.30am on NYE there will be a fireworks barge in Victoria Harbour, Docklands. Between these times no vessels will be permitted within the 120-meter exclusion zone or allowed to enter/exit the Harbour.

    Public Transport

    On New Year’s Eve all train, bus and tram services will run to a normal Tuesday timetable, with additional train services running between 6pm and midnight.

    • Southern Cross and Flinders Street train stations will be open all night.
    • Parliament, Melbourne Central and Flagstaff stations close at 3am.
    • Trams will run to a holiday timetable with the City Circle not running all day.
    • V/Line train and road coach services will run to a normal weekday timetable.
    • On 1 January 2025, trains and trams will run to a public holiday timetable.

    People attending New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city are strongly encouraged to use public transport services. If you are planning to catch a taxi or ride share service, please note that it is very difficult for vehicles to get in and out of the city due to road closures.

    If you are thinking of driving into the city on New Year’s Eve, book your parking spot ahead of time for the best rates.

    We want everyone to be able to safely celebrate New Year’s Eve. All Celebration Zones are accessible and include accessible toilets, however please note that some grassy, inclined areas in Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and The Shrine may present a challenge.

    Registered service animals are permitted, but please be aware of the potential impact from firework noise at 9.30pm and midnight.

    We’ve partnered with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme to deliver the Sunflower symbol initiative assisting those with hidden disabilities. People who need assistance can choose to wear a Sunflower symbol so that trained Celebration Zones staff can offer their assistance.
